Introduction
ST3AM is an Erasmus+ co-funded project addressing gender discrimination in STEM fields, where women are underrepresented, comprising only 28% of researchers. The gender gap is driven by bias, not a lack of skills. Promoting gender equality in STEM is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goals and boosting economic growth. ST3AM aims to increase female participation in STEM, potentially raising EU GDP by 3% by 2050.
We work on the ST3AM project, to integrate arts into STEM education. Through this, we create gender-sensitive curricula, develop creative teaching methods, and provide tools to inspire innovation, inclusivity, and leadership.
Work Packages
WP1 - Project management
The ST3AM project employs distinct mechanisms for monitoring and ensuring quality outcomes, including a Project Management Handbook (by ESTIA) to provide templates, methodologies, and risk management strategies for tracking progress and impact, and a Quality Assurance & Evaluation Plan (by UNIWA) with detailed evaluation procedures and reporting templates.
Progress is tracked through quarterly and dissemination reports, frequent partner communication via meetings, and internal WP assessments using semi-structured tools.
Governance is supported by three boards: an Intra-operational Board for activity tracking, a Quality Assurance Board for result validation, and an Exploitation Board for evaluating dissemination impact against KPIs.
WP2 - ST3AM Blueprint
WP2 focuses on enhancing STEM higher education (HE) participation, particularly in engineering and ICT, by using a 3A methodology—Attract, Attain, and Access—supported by evidence-based data and analysis.
Objectives include creating datasheets guided by the SAGA Indicator Matrix, assessing institutional data on STEM programs (e.g., graduation and dropout rates, including gender disparities), and evaluating Gender Equality Plans with an emphasis on gender-sensitive pedagogy.
Additionally, psychological and practical barriers like bias, self-efficacy, and stereotyping will be identified. These efforts aim to inform curriculum reforms, promote inclusivity, and implement targeted strategies to increase participation, retention, and success in STEM HE, regardless of gender.
All the activities that take place under WP will synthesize the ST3AM Blueprint, as a practical repository of all.
WP3 - Gender-sensitive curriculum and methods reformation & Beta Classrooms
WP3 focuses on cultivating gender-sensitive pedagogy and inclusive practices in STEM education by reforming curricula and teaching methods to ensure gender equity. It aims to train HE educators to design inclusive lesson plans, promote gender-sensitive interactions, and provide female students with tools to enhance their learning experiences.
The integration of STEAM approaches, including creative disciplines, enriches technocratic STEM education. By setting a fertile ground for a supportive environment, encouraging female leadership in STEM, raising awareness of gender equity’s socio-technical impact, and collaborating with external stakeholders, WP3 seeks to address biases, promote diversity, and advance innovative, interdisciplinary solutions in STEM education and professions.
WP4 - ST3AMspiration and Leadership Hub
WP4 emphasizes on the creation of the ST3AMspiration and Leadership Hub, a multifunctional digital space to host project deliverables and facilitate a community for targeted groups.
It seeks to collect and share inspiring success stories of women in STEM as role models, promoting self-confidence and advocacy. The hub will serve as the project’s focal point, encapsulating theoretical insights, connecting stakeholders, and stimulating interdisciplinary collaboration.
WP4 also includes a blended Learning, Teaching, and Training Activity (LTTA) to test developed tools in an interactive HE setting. These activities aim to build a supportive network, enhance the visibility of deliverables, and encourage a more inclusive and participatory STEM education environment.
WP5 - Dissemination, Exploitation & 3A National Synergies in STEM
WP5 crafts an effective dissemination strategy and organizes participatory 3-day awareness events to exploit project results. These events aim to communicate ST3AM’s outcomes to a broader audience, create synergies among key sectors (HEIs, schools, and STEM industries), and address gender disparities in STEM education.
By engaging stakeholders at a national level, WP5 seeks to go beyond the project’s institutions, promoting female leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an inclusive learning environment.
The events and strategy will build robust networks, enhance visibility, and inspire innovative solutions to increase gender equity and diversity in STEM fields.
Unlocking Diverse Perspectives in STEM

ST3AM’s efforts to drive systemic change in STEM education contribute to closing the gender gap, supporting economic growth, and enhancing workforce development.
